the pain of rock and roll

August 12th, 2007

Well, if there’s a way to injure myself, I’m gonna find it!

Saturday at rehearsal, I managed to pull, twist and strain my right knee. You know, the one good one I had left! It wasn’t all that bad when it happened. You know, if you’re used to the feeling of a knife being thrust(ed?) into the back of your knee!

So I’ve been taking care of it the best I can. Sitting on my ass, knee brace, complaining, the whole 9 yards (while watching The Whole 9 Yards. Go figure). Went to the doctor today just to make sure I’m not making this thing worse and thankfully, it looks like I’ll be back to my “normal” self in a week or two.

Besides…a sprained knee isn’t going to stop me from rock and roll! It WILL stop me from running the sweeper however.

Okay, thats really all I have to say at the moment. I’m gonna go do the dishes…wait…no I’m not. Where are the cookies?

New shows, New Cymbals, and New DVDs

July 1st, 2007

Well, actually…I didn’t get any new shoes. I think about about due for some though!

So things have been pretty hectic as always. The patientZero shows thus far this year have been a lot of fun. It looks like this week we’re going to get a couple weeks “off” from doing anything live, but I’m sure we’ll be busy working on the 1,000 irons we have in the fire.

Lets see….oh! Got some new Bosphorus Cymbals on the way. I’m really looking forward to that. I’m a gear freak so any new gear makes me giddy. I ordered a few of the “Gold” series cymbals. I seem to lean to those and the Traditionals the most.

I’ve been on a DVD binge lately. The newest is a movie called “Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang” No…its not a porno (sickies). This is probably one of my new favorite films. The writing in it is really smart, and the cast rules. It features Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. Both of them do AMAZING jobs. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and GO GET IT!

I’m also excited in hearing that there’s going to be a Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 6 coming soon to my favorite channel of HBO. I can’t wait for the new season! And speaking of HBO, Season 4 of Entourage is off to an AMAZING start.

Okay…well thats all for now. Just thought I’d write in this thing for once. I ate McDonald’s and I’m not feelin’ so hot right now. The McGirgles are setting in! :o(

Ciao for now,

Its almost March, I’m slacking!

February 27th, 2007

Are you serious?! Has it been since DECEMBER since I’ve written my last blog? Lordy, I really need to keep up on things. So first things first (and I’ll update the site to reflect all this), patientZero is doing GREAT. We’re in talks with a lot of industry people right now so things are moving in the right direction. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail (as always) until something comes of something. You know how it goes!

I CAN say that our first of several tour dates have been booked. We’ll be starting in Austin, TX at the South By Southwest Music & Film Festival. That will be on March 14th. Dates are soon to come for our spring dates.

Its a little depressing that so many good things are going on, but I can’t discuss ANY of them. I gotta keep my big mouth shut and you know how hard this is for me. Believe me, for those of you who care enough to stop by and read, I’ll be sure to post as soon as I find out about whatever it is I can’t tell ya. Follow that?

Other than that stuff, just doing my thing. I bought a new snare today. Actually, its like new, a friend of mine sold it to me. I played it at rehearsal last night and fell in love. It was love at first sight (cue sappy music).  That may not seem like much to you, but I love new gear. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Been watching movies as always. Not too many new ones, but Crank has recently become a favorite of mine. High-energy, dry humor, and its got Jason Stathem (or however you spell his name) and he’s an English Badass.

I guess thats all for now, just thought I’d stop by and say hi!!!!

I hope everyone is doing well. Talk to you soon!

I am patient, for patientZero.

December 10th, 2006

I am happy to announce (LATE…woopsie!), that I have officially joined Cincinatti band patientZero. These guys are incredible.  It was kind of a trial basis there for a bit for various reasons. Never-the-less, I gave them a definite YES that I’m all aboard!

I can’t remember what I wrote in my last post about them, but I’ve known Chris Sarvak for a few years now. Its been one of those deals where he and I always wanted to work with one another, but due to scheduling conflicts and prior band commitments, it just couldn’t happen. Until recently anyway.  The time has FINALLY come!

Aaron, the guitarist of the band is another great guy. He’s a really great guitarist and has an amazing personality. He’s easy to work with, knows how to have fun, and is great at what he does.Together, the three of us are hard at work getting ready to schedule dates in early ’07 (and by early, I mean JANUARY).

Currently, we’re getting me all caught up learning the material while taking care of some business needs. I really had to hit the ground running with these guys, but at least its in a direction that I’ve wanted to go for years now. They’re giving me a lot of creative input and freedom.  Which is amazing considering how new I am to them!  We’ve been doing some rehearsals, and honestly…I’m blown away. Everything is really coming together and becoming very tight. I can’t wait to see what the live show is going to be like when this is all said and done.

So for now, I’m going to remain hard at work with my new and old friends in pZ.  Look for tour dates in January and in the meantime, we’re workin’ on a little something else. *wink wink* thats all I can say…

Not to leave out EM5, the show went GREAT! John, Ken and myself had a great time. We’re talking about booking some more dates and throwing some new songs into the mix. We had a really nice crowd, so if you were there and are reading this, keep coming back! We’re going to try and keep the shows as fresh as possible each time.

Thats all for now! Go finish your Christmas shopping. 🙂

Talk to you soon,

p.s. Sorry for cancelling last weeks show in Cleveland with Mechanics of Things. I was really looking forward to playing with them at the Dimebag Tribute show. Unfortunately, an emergency had come up that required my attention and had to bail out of the show the night before. Sorry!!!

Ah! All fresh and new.

November 12th, 2006

Well, what do you think?! I got a new website, new blog and I got a new Playstation Game last night. All in all, life is good! So, let me bring you up to speed.

Things are busier than ever. Its occuring to me that I think I write that in every blog, which means, things keep getting busier. I’m playing with SEVERAL groups right now, so to keep this as easy as possible, I’ll break it down one by one.

We’re still hard at work. We’ve hit a road bump here and there, but all in all, things are on a steady course.  “Why Do I Like” you is all ready for mixing. “Death By Texas” is going to get a guitar make-over as well as “Da Freaks.” As I said, Ken Walker (Guitarist for my other band EM5) is really doing an amazing job. Victoria and I keep throwing challenges at him, and he keeps knockin’em down! Not only is he laying down some amazing guitar tracks, but he’s also taking on the task of handling a lot of the bands pre-production work. He preps the Pro-Tools files, records the scratch tracks, etc. Making our actual studio time much easier. I wanted to make sure I gave him props in this blog.

We’re also talking about doing a music video for one (maybe two) of the songs. We have someone who works with E! Entertainment (does editing) who’s interested in working with us. We’re still working on the treatment for the video, but it is undergoing talks.

Oh, and check the “Sounds” page on my site. I added a quick teaser of “Why Do I Like You” 😉

Speaking EM5! Ken, my brother, and myself have been on a hiatus lately. Mostly due to schedules, but will be performing at The Nite Owl, December 1st as part of a “jam band” night. This should be a lot of fun. I’ve been waiting to do another gig with this band for quite sometime now. We’re all really excited!!! 🙂

Mechanics of Things
I recorded with them a few weeks ago and just had a blast. These guys are a riot!  They wanted to record a demo to get more shows, and continue talks they are having with some big-wig NYC producer. (I mean big-wig in a good way…)  I haven’t been with them since the studio, but we’re talking about doing some shows in December and hopefully a showcase sometime after the up-coming holiday. I’ll let you know more when I know more!

As you may or may not know, Ripple was my very first rock band that I played with for years. We did an acoustic set a few months back as well as a one-off reunion show at the Tipp City Mum Festival. Well, now we’re talking about doing some more. I think we’ll be playing at the Leaf & Vine (Troy, OH) November 25th doing another acoustic show. We’re also tossing the idea around of doing another club date. The question is…where?  I guess we shall see!

Who the hell?! Thats right, I’ve added another band to my roster!  Actually, they’ve added me. I’ve been friends with Chris for a few years now. We’ve been wanting to work with each other since day one, but things never really aligned to make that happen until recently. I just had my first rehearsal with them last night in Cincy. We did a lot of talking and of course some jamming. I gotta tell ya, the chemistry was definitely there!!! Not only are they talented, but they are the nicest people you could come by.

These guys are on the border of mainstream and progressive rock. I really felt the vibe and am very excited to play some more with them. I’ve been wanting to do something in the “progish” realm for YEARS and they are giving me the freedom to do just that. They want to start hitting the venues again beginning in December, so look for me!!! THIS IS GOING TO BE KILLER!

Other than that, not much going on! Been going to see more and more movies lately in my spare time. The Departed, while I had my doubts, is probably one of my years favorite. GREAT movie!!!!

I hope ya’ll are ready to do your Christmas shopping!!! I know I’m not.

Carpe diem,

What will be, will be.

August 25th, 2006

While I didn’t actually announce it on this site, I have officially announced that I left Broken Ground. Its time and nothing personal between me and the other guys. Everything is on good terms.NOW, onto what I’ve been up to. SHEMONSTER was offered to open for Billy Idol next month, then after receiving the news that Billy’s band couldn’t do the gig, they then asked us to play WITH Billy. The problem? SHEMONSTER is only a three piece! So, I came up with a plan. I asked the members of my Dayton band EM5 to play the SHEMONSTER music AND Billy’s music. However, as the music industry goes, things did not exactly pan out. Logistical reasons stopped us from actually getting the gig. The point, is that the offer was on the table, and that is good news. Not getting discouraged, SHEMONSTER is not losing a step. Victoria had her friend Bret send the master files to our next tune that I will be recording in early September. This is a rocker folks! I can’t WAIT for you to hear it. I’m BEYOND excited about this track. I also think we’re going to make some mixing adjustments to “Death By Texas” so if you want a copy of the current version for your collection, iPod or whatever, let me know and I’ll get it to ya.

Speaking of recordings, EM5 did some recording of some cover songs earlier this summer. I’ll see where my brother is on the mixing and get some of those tracks up on the website here soon.

OH! While I’m on the subject of the website, I’m happy to announce that April Smith (the designer) is on board for the NEW site. I’ll be compiling the materials here the next few weeks and production shall begin! Any suggestions that you’d like to see on the new site? EMAIL THEM TO ME!

I hope everyone’s summer is going well! I should have more news here soon…

Luv ya! :^)

Recording Studio, Tour bus and Superman!

June 21st, 2006

Its been a bit since I’ve posted anything on here, so I’ll touch base on a few things.

First, I did some studio work a few weeks back and just go the rough mixes over the weekend. This is just a fun project I’m done with my brother and our guitarist (for a band we have yet to name). We wanted to lay down some of our cover songs we play to get more gigs (I guess I should use the word “some” as opposed to “more.”) I am SO excited! These are turning out pretty good! Its funny though, since we started the recording project (and band for that matter), we’ve always just meant for this to be a fun let-loose deal where we just jam, and do a gig here and there. Well as of late, it appears this group has taken a more serious turn and wishes to go off the road of covers and onto the highway of originals! I won’t get into a lot of the details yet, but we shall see what comes of this.

Second, over the weekend I was able to catch up with my friend Page Hamilton. Helmet is currently on the Vans Warped Tour and invited me out to watch the set and hang out afterwards. They put on a great show and the new material is KILLER! I only heard a small portion of it when I was in LA last and was impressed then! I hung out with the band for a few hours after the show in catering and on the tour bus just shooting the shit. Speaking of their bus, 2nd day of the tour and their air conditioner broke! Page and I walked on the bus and it was INSTANT sweat. It was unbelievable. It was already hot as balls outside, this was insane! Thankfully (for them), their bus driver got out of his slumber and fixed it. Its true, you don’t realize what you have until you don’t have it anymore. Hopefully, it holds up the rest of the tour.

And finally, I can’t BEGIN to tell you how excited I am about the new Superman movie!
Anyone who really knows me, knows I’ve been a Superman fan since I was a kid. Of course I’m a fan of the Christopher Reeves movies and will go into this movie with a little chip on my shoulder. However, it appears my giddiness towards the new film is getting the best of me and taking over any suspicions I had about the film. I can’t tell you how happy I am that they are still using the same John Williams score that they used in the other 4 movies. That’s just the icing on the cake! You know where I’ll be June 28th!!!!! And probably the 29th and 30th too. Haha

Well, I got some things to do, so off I go. I’ll post more often, promise (for those of you who actually read this thing)!

Until next time friends…carpe diem…

Back from Hollyweird

April 4th, 2006

My latest adventure to LaLa Land was and productive to say the least. I had a few items of business to tend to while I was out there but made sure I had time to hang out with my friends too.

All in all, a great experience.  I think the first thing I did once in town (after a rather gut-wrenching taxi drive to Victoria’s place) was watch The Big Lebowski. A mutual favorite movie b/t me and Vikki. Once that was done, we decided to head into N. Hollywood to a little restaurant she frequents. Thats one of the great things about visiting her, she always takes me to neat little places to eat while going to some of my favorites as well. relaxed

That night, we went and grabbed a few drinks with Page Hamilton, guitarist/singer of Helmet. Remember them? That was good times. The next day, Page and I got together to jam for a few hours. Great experience, we had a lot of fun.

Saturday night, we had a SHEMONSTER rehearsal to test out another drummer/guitarist. I guess I should mention, Victoria is also the mastermind behind the LA project SHEMONSTER. You’ll be hearing more and more about that here soon. ecstatic That night, we put on our best cloths and showered (not in that order) and went to Bevery Hills to see my friend Evan play with a jazz trio. Hung out with the swanky rich-folk for an evening with wine and munchies (the rich love it when you use the word ‘munchies’).  It was good to see Evan again. We always have a good time as well.  Luckily, the 3 of us had time after his set to hang out and chat for awhile (while taking goofy pics of course!) cool Finally Sunday, Vik and I decided to go out, cruise around town and enjoy the beautiful weather. Ate at our MUST STOP, the In and Out Burger. No big deal for you Westerners, but us here in the East dont have such cool burger establishments!  Then we drove near where she lives in the Hollywood hills to gander at houses we wish we had, dodge crazy-ass drivers, and of course visit the sign.

LA is becoming a 2nd home to me. I believe I’ll be returnning again soon. Wouldn’t YOU like to know why?!?!?! HA! Not tellin’…yet…amused

That, is in short…my latest adventure. See you soon!

Carpe diem,
AF P.S. I ran into Ben Stein at LAX. HA! Randomcool. horny

Below are some pics of the trip I’ll share…Enjoy!

You can’t get me outta this place!! I always go in to try and find weird/obscure things that I usually can’t find elsewhere.

(HINT: My shoes don’t match my outfit.)

The dirt truck really makes this photo.

My second message! But the first for 2006.

February 15th, 2006

Well hi! I’m sitting here watching a Family Guy DVD, and realized, I haven’t touched base with my friends! So I’ll take a minute to bring you up to speed.I’ve been doing a lot more shows with Broken Ground lately. Because its winter time, we’re staying in the local tri-state area but never-the-less, its been great to be on stage again. We’ve had some great shows with some new material that I’m really getting into. It’s also looking like BG will not be my only musical venture for the year. Now of course, I can’t say anything until things are certain. I don’t wanna jinx myself! But as soon as things come about, I’ll be sure to post them on here. So if you’re really THAT interested, then check back here from time to time. I got a feeling 2006 is going to be a pretty good year. *wink*

Hmm, lets see. Other than that, not too much going on! Thanks for coming back and visiting me here. I hope to have more cool features on the site here before long. See ya soon!

Carpe diem,

My First Message!

December 29th, 2005

WELCOME! This is my first of many “random blabbers” on my new website. Which I love…THANK YOU APRIL! Lets give her a round shall we? What to write about…hmm….OO! I know. My concerts of 2005.

Well, I was kinda slackin’ this year of seeing live shows, but never-the-less…here’s a review of who I saw, and what I thought of’em. Just incase you were sitting there thinking, “GOSH! When will Aaron ever post his thoughts of the concerts he saw this year?!?!?!”

In no particular order:
Porcupine Tree: One of my new favorite bands! These guys completely caught me off guard recently with a very unique sound. There live show was no exception to their amazing performance on their albums.

Robert Fripp: Uhm. I saw Robert Fripp.  Don’t know who he is? Yeah, me either. It was the most confusing thing I’ve ever seen live.  He’s not rockin, but he is…sounds.

Fear Factory: WooWee! These guys are a really tight live band. I really enjoyed their set. They sure know how to get the crowd into it!

Dream Theater: As you probably know, one of my favorite all time bands.  They have yet to fail me live. Once again, one of the best live shows I’ve seen. I think this was my 7th (?) time seeing them.  Each show very different from the other.

Alter Bridge: VERY cool now that they’re not Creed.  I was impressed with this drummer on the album and even more-so live. I thought these guys were really great live. I had seen Creed a few years back, but w/o Scott Stapp or their “Stapp Infection“, they were 10 times better!

Megadeth: Was never a really big fan. I’ll give’em props for their live show. It was definitely that, a show. But to be honest, I only stuck around for 4 or 5 songs. They were good, but enough is enough.

3 Doors Down: Saw these boys twice this year. I saw them last year and I thought these two shows were much tighter.  Maybe it was an off night when I saw them in ’04.  My friend JT and Greg Upchurch (the drummer) was VERY nice enough to hook me up with passes and tix for both shows that I was at (thanks guys!!contemplative) He is one hard-hitting mutha fatha! All in all, GREAT live show and the band is hella-nice.

The Black Crows: WHAT A FUN SHOW!  It was a priveledge to see these guys live. Wish I knew more of their tunes. jealous

Shinedown: These guys were pretty good. Giving them the benefit of the doubt anyway.  Their sound really wasn’t up to par, but that isn’t their fault.  The band itself is tight. The vocals however, were pretty rough. Again, giving them the benefit of the doubt, it WAS near the end of their tour.

Tom Petty: FINALLY! mischevious I waited a LONG time to see Tom and it was a last minute thing to go this time. But it was SO worth it. Probably one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. He’s still got it!

The Steve Morse Band & The Dixie Dregs: I’ve saw the Dregs a few years ago opening up for Dream Theater.  This time, me and my friend Ken had front row and we both got a pic AND setlist from the band.  I was more into the Dregs than the Steve Morse band. Probably b/c I knew more of their tunes. But Steve fronts both.  The highlight of this evening was the drum duet b/t Rod Morganstein and Van Romain. HOLY SHIT!!!!! awake I have NEVER seen anything like it.  Made me just wanna quit drums right then and their. I still might…

Butch Walker: I’ve also waited a LONG time to see Butch play live. I saw him in a small club in Columbus on a small ass stage. But let me tell you this, he used what little space he had like it was an arena. This is by far, the most intense show i’ve seen.  enthralled It was absolutely amazing! He played favorites of when he was in The Marvelous 3 as well as some of his new stuff.  I can’t WAIT to see him again. That performance will be in my top 5 of all time. Very…VERY moving.

Well folks! Thats all for now.  It should have been longer, but there were a few bands that I couldn’t get to (steve vai, 311, and better than ezra).  Now you may sleep well knowing who I saw, and what I thought.

Carpe diem,

P.S. Did anyone else count how many times I used the word “tight?”

P.P.S. 3 times. I know…seemed like more.
